Walkability workshops seek to improve safety, access, and connectivity in Indianapolis

Community members invited to attend virtual events

Virtual workshops will kick-off today, Tuesday, February 23, to build on continued efforts by Walkability Champion Teams throughout Indianapolis. The two-part workshop series will cover walking-related information and resources, allow residents to provide input on needed community improvements, and lead to area action plans for improving walkability.

The workshops are a continuation of the Indy WalkWays initiative – a partnership between Health by Design, the City of Indianapolis, and the Marion County Public Health Department – with the goals of making Indianapolis safer, more accessible, and inviting for people to walk and roll. The initiative is currently focused on outreach, engagement, and organizing efforts in neighborhoods in the Midtown, Near Northeast, Near Westside, and Westside areas of the city.

Over the past six months, Health by Design staff and partners have collected and analyzed crash report data, gathered information about community assets and barriers, and conducted pedestrian safety audits. These findings, along with information gathered through the workshops, will be used to guide the development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures to improve safety and walkability in the focus areas and city-wide.

“Convenient and comfortable options for walking are the foundation of equitable access to healthy food, transit and jobs, educational opportunities, and recreational and civic destinations,” said Kim Irwin, Health by Design executive director. “Yes, walkability is about safety and access, but it’s also about connecting people and places while building and strengthening community bonds.

All residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend the general community workshop on February 23. The second set of workshops are intended for people living and working within the respective focus areas. Learn more and sign-up at www.indywalkways.org/events/.
